While at Placeworks, John was lead designer and Project Manager to prepare design development and construction documents for this unique 27 acre community park in the heart of Alameda. When complete, the park will provide a broad array of amenities and experiences for the public including a community gathering area with a large trellised plaza, picnic pavilion and open lawn for events, two play areas with traditional and natural play features and experiences, an historic railroad exhibit interpreting the site’s previous use by the Beltline Railway, a large community garden and demonstration gardens. Over half the site will be designed as habitat and hiking trails with ongoing opportunities for outdoor education and nature-watching. A trail loop for bikes and pedestrians will encircle the park and interpretive signage and public art displays will be featured throughout the park. Construction of the first phase was completed in 2018.
