While at Placeworks, John was the lead landscape architect and designer of the Shields-Reid Park upgrades, a 3-acre park in the North Richmond neighborhood. John prepared a schematic design, construction documents, detailed construction specifications, and cost estimates for a revitalized park that improves a highly used, loved, and much-needed community amenity. The landscape improvements, children’s playground upgrade, and rehabilitation of existing baseball and passive use fields will help to reinforce the sense of community, incorporate sustainable principles, and serve as a unique gathering and recreational place that nearby residents can take pride in. The park design process considered visibility and public safety throughout the park and maintains clear sight lines that will not only provide a greater sense of security to those using the park, but also make it easier to monitor and observe park activity from the street.
