While with Placeworks, John Hykes was lead designer and Project Manager to develop a design concept for Snow Park, reconfigure Lakeside Drive between 19th Avenue and Harrison Street, and improve the path and landscape along Lake Merritt’s edge, as outlined in the 2002 Lake Merritt Master Plan. The Snow Park redesign will improve the functionality of the park to meet the needs of the local community, and the Streetscape Plan will reconfigure the intersection at 20th Street, reduce traffic lanes, and create a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly multimodal corridor along Lakeside Drive and Harrison Street adjacent to Lake Merritt. Snow Park was historically the site of Henry Snow’s Snow Museum, an extensive collection of taxidermy, open to the public and a resource for local school children. The playground concept works within the topography and footprint of the existing park adjacent to a historic restroom building to be renovated as part of the project. The playground includes whicmsical art features that include animal prints and colorful safety surfacing design. The plans for the entire project have been developed into construction documents and construction commenced in 2017.
